Rosario Dawson And Wilmer Valderrama Make Out To Lure Young Latino Voters To The Polls

Rosario Dawson and Wilmer Valderrama want young Latinos to participate in the 2008 election. So they’re starring in a series of telenovela-inspired spots intended to inspire Latino youth to the polls. In the first segment, “La Pasion de la Decision” (below), Dawson’s character, Carmen, is engaged to Valderrama’s character, Rodrigo, and declares that “there is nothing that you can tell me that will change the way that I feel about Rodrigo.”

When she is told that Rodrigo isn’t registered to vote, she becomes upset and calls off the engagement:

CARMEN: “What? You’re legal, right?”
RODRIGO: “Of course, Carmen. Of course I’m legal.”
CARMEN: “So how come you’re not registered to vote?
RODRIGO: “I just, I’ve never really gotten around to registering to vote.
CARMEN: “But It’s so easy!”
RODRIGO: “I’ve never really thought that voting ever mattered.”
CARMEN: “No, I do not know. Who are you?” (she runs away)
RODRIGO: “Carmen, espera!”

The spots, which mark Valderrama’s directorial debut, are produced by Voto Latino and Declare Yourself, two non-partisan organizations aimed at empowering young Americans to participate in the electoral process (though Voto Latino, which was co-founded by Rosario Dawson in 2004, aims specifically at empowering Latino youth).
