Sci Fi Channel Teams Up with Rosario Dawson

SCI FI Channel unveiled a slate of original scripted series pilots, including True Believer, developed in partnership with actress and comic-book fan Rosario Dawson, and The Stranded, the first release under the newly formed joint venture SCI FI/Virgin Comics.

True Believer is a two-hour backdoor pilot based on an original concept from Dawson, David Atchinson (Dawson’s co-author on the Image Comics series Occult Crimes Task Force), Matthew Spradlin and Tom Feister. The contemporary dramedy centers on a 20-something comic book nerd who hires a washed-up real-life superhero to be his crimefighting sidekick and to teach him the ropes.

Dawson will serve as executive producer, with Atchinson and Spradlin aboard to write. Feister will consult on the project.

Erin Fetherston & Star Pals Kick Off L.A. Fashion Week

Designer Erin Fetherston is slowly but surely building an empire. First there was her cheap-chic line for Target. Next up: a bridal collection! “We get a lot of requests from brides. And the cool alternative bride that wants to get married in a pink dress instead of white so I figured we could just cater to that,” Fetherston told PEOPLE at the latest hot spot Villa, where she debuted her latest collaboration with Ellen Von Unwerth, A Dreamy Wander — a short film featuring Zooey Deschanel in the woods in a variety of nymph-like, ethereal creations from the Fall 2008 Collection. While Fetherston showed at NY Fashion Week, Rosario Dawson, for one, loved the film: “[It’s an] artistic way of viewing clothing and life. I think that’s a really awesome thing. That’s very Erin.” Would Dawson like to be Fetherston’s next muse? “Oh yeah, absolutely! Just her concept is so great. She has that cool avant-garde different kind of thing about herself like old school. Like you can see she runs in great cliques of great artists,” says Dawson, who sipped on a cosmo inside the hot spot, which Angie Harmon described as “boudoir hippie eclectic.” Other Fetherston fans: Rachel Zoe and Leelee Sobieski, who donned a dress straight off the racks from Satine, who hosted the event along with Katie Holmes’s stylist Jeanne Yang.

Rosario Dawson: Supernova

Actress Rosario Dawson — best known for her breakout in “Kids” and Quentin Tarantino’s wicked Austin-made “Death Proof” — talks a mile a minute and has a face like a freshly bloomed pink rose. (Pink Rosario?)

Ask her a question, then sit back and enjoy the machine-gun fire for the next, oh, 10 to 20 minutes as she answers, loquaciously, logorrheically. She’s awesome. She’s in Austin to screen her urban drama “Explicit Ills,” which stars pint-sized child actor Francisco Burgos, who radiates the screen.

‘Rent’: The Cast Looks Back

Entertainment Weekly does a piece looking back on Rent’s 12 year run. Rosario is quoted in the piece.

For the film, two Broadway stars were MIA: A pregnant Rubin-Vega, who was replaced by Rosario Dawson, and Walker-Browne, whose role was played by Tracie Thoms.

Walker-Browne: I was too old. I’m sorry. I cannot front 26 on camera.

Rubin-Vega: I felt that I was kind of conspicuously uninvited to a party.

Dawson: I grew up in a squat on the Lower East Side, so I lived that lifestyle. I found out Chris was doing it, and I was like, I have to do this. I have practically zero training in theater, and I’m going to go into this audition and make a fool of myself because I know who Mimi is, and I love her, and I want her to be represented the best she can be. I went in there and sold myself so hard.

Rubin-Vega: But Rosario was — I don’t know. She belonged there.

Dawson: I didn’t talk to Daphne. That was a little bit awkward. I’m still anxious about it. Her voice and what she did with that character is iconic. I hope that at one point we’ll be able to sit down and be cool.

SXSW First Look: Mark Webber’s Explicit Ills

The SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX begins later this week and we’re looking at a few of the films that will be premiering there. Today is our final first look preview from SXSW for the feature film Explicit Ills, written and directed by Mark Webber. Unfortunately we don’t have a trailer for this, only a few photos, but it’s one I definitely wanted to feature because it’s high on my list of films to check out – it just sounds like it could be great. It stars Rosario Dawson, Paul Dano, Lou Taylor Pucci, Naomie Harris, and Tariq Trotter. In Explicit Ills, young love, drugs and poverty collide in the city of Philadelphia creating a beautiful tale of hope and the power of coming together.

The film follows four inter-connecting stories revolving around love, drugs and poverty in Philadelphia. Babo, an asthma ridden seven-year-old lives with his mother in the badlands of North Philly. His neighbor Demetri transforms himself into a well-read “smart” boy in order to get the girl. Michelle, a well-off art student is quick to fall into a drug induced love-affair with her dealer Jacob. Kaleef and Jill’s marriage is strained as they pursue their dreams of bringing “produce to the people” as their teenage son Heslin focuses on competing in the World’s Strongest Man competition. The lyrical and moving drama finds its core as all members come together in their fight for justice and self-discovery.

Explicit Ills is both written and directed by first-time filmmaker and indie actor Mark Webber, most known for his minor performances in indie movies like Broken Flowers and The Hottest State. This will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival with the first showing on Saturday, March 8th at 9:15PM. Explicit Ills doesn’t have a US distributor yet, but I’m sure if it’s good, it will be picked up eventually.

You can be certain that we’ll be seeing this at SXSW and will be one of the first to report back on our thoughts. Check out the full-line up of films showing at SXSW this year.
