Rosario Dawson On Sin City II, Politics And Playing The Superhero

No stranger to the comics scene and the films it has inspired, Rosario Dawson told MTV News that despite being a fan herself, the “Sin City” actress knows better than to jump into just any part pulled from the pages of a comic.“You’ve seen a lot of comic films be made really well and then some of them not made so well,” said Dawson. “So even if it’s a great character that they’re making, it doesn’t mean the script is so great.”

But what sort of comics film does she want to do?

“I just did a voice in the ‘Wonder Woman’ animated film that’s going to be coming out,” Dawson told MTV, adding that along with developing a film based on her own series, “O.C.T.”, she would “love to work with Frank [Miller] again or Robert [Rodriguez] and finish ‘Sin City II.’

Even so, the geek-savvy Dawson said that these days, there’s a battle she’s more interested in than anything found in comics — the upcoming national election.

“I’m not even thinking about acting right now,” explained Dawson. “I’m not going to be working for the next couple of months. I’m just sort of working on my voting organization and writing a PSA for that right now.”

“This election has gripped all of our attention,” she added, “but definitely mine.”

Rosario Dawson’s Parade Magazine Interview

Rosario Dawson keeps mixing up her big-screen choices. She got kudos for last year’s devastating portrayal of a revenge-seeking rape victim in the low budget film Descent, which she also produced.

And now she’s in the middle of the big-budget action thriller Eagle Eye, opposite Shia LaBeouf, as a government agent trying to unmask a mysterious female who’s using technology to control her victims’ every move.

Q: In Eagle Eye, everyone’s privacy is at risk. Have you ever been a little obsessive about protecting your own?

A: Totally. It’s freaky, but I was never been able to keep diary as a child because I was always afraid that someone was going to read it. I remember I used to write stuff down that I really thought I should remember. But I would write it in code. And then I’d try to read what I wrote and I couldn’t. I’m going, ‘Oh, this just sucks.’ But I always had this weird feeling that someone could invade my privacy.

Q: I guess Eagle Eye is a reminder that we’re even more vulnerable in the electronic world in which we live.

A: It seems like everything from your e-mails to cell phone calls get recorded and there are video cameras everywhere. You go online to shop and a web site tells you, ‘This is what you bought last week so this is what you would like this week.’ It’s scary where we’re going.

Rosario Dawson Looks Ahead To More ‘O.C.T.’ Comics, Feature Film

During a recent interview with MTV News, actress and popular object of geek affection Rosario Dawson shed some light on the current state of affairs for “O.C.T.”, the comic series she co-created that’s been on Hollywood’s radar for nearly two years now.“We are in negotiations to hopefully get ["O.C.T."] out from the Weinstein Company and put it someplace else,” said Dawson, “and when we do that, we can start concentrating on it again.”

Dawson said she and her “O.C.T.” co-creators hope to have a new miniseries published in the near future, but wants to be sure their respective workloads don’t cause major, mid-story delays.

“Believe me, I can understand the stress of that,” said Dawson, “I want my next ‘Johnny the Homocidal Maniac’ comic right now, and it doesn’t come out for years.”

As for a timetable on the film adaptation, Dawson told MTV she hopes to see “O.C.T.” in theaters (or at least in production) within the next three years, adding that the title has built up an “interesting fan base.”

“We’ve had so much fun with it, and we’re not tired of the story yet,” she added. “We want to explore it so much more, so I think there’s definitely room for it to be a really great film if we are blessed.”
