While “Declare Yourself” ads are using violent images to shock voters to the polls, Rosario Dawson is proving that political dedication symbolizes much more than a scandalous snap shot. The “Eagle Eye” actress has been genuinely vocal about demonstrating her feminine endurance outside of the Hollywood landscape with her bi-partisan organization Voto Latino. Her intense activism and inspirational rhetoric manages to dismantle all of the stereotypes of the hot Latina bombshell one voter registration at a time. Rosario quickly dimmed stereotypical perceptions after she admitted to having an HIV positive family member and being raised by a teenage mother in New York City. Challenge the image you see across the camera lens and focus on what this humanistic Latina has to say de corazón right below the hood!

What do you think discourages young people to vote?
I think there are a few things. One major conversation that I have with my brother all the time points to the fact that we are a republic not a democracy. There are some elements in our politically system that can, to some degree, legally disqualify votes. When young people start realizing that and start learning about what the processes are, it can be very discouraging, but all those choices can be changed again. By participating politically, things can change for the better.
What do you think voting represents for our youth?
Young people vote on “American Idol” all the time. They understand what it means to vote, but the process isn’t as immediate as just picking a winner. You have to look at health care, war, economy, and social issues. I think people do see the pathway to go towards. Most young people are saying, ‘My voice needs to be heard right know.’
Do you think that the apathetic wave is a myth or a reality?
There is so much in the press that points to young people being apathetic, and I think that discourages them to a large degree. It is important to show how that is not the case at all. In 2006 there were two million young people that hit the streets for the immigration issue. That symbolized a catalyst for change. Clearly that proves the media wrong, which gives [Voto Latino] the opportunity to motivate them to march to the polls.
What are your thoughts on celebrities endorsing politicians and the drama that can spark-up?
It’s a part of our duty to be involved. When you look at how active artists were during the Vietnam War, it is no wonder why stars are realizing historical relevance in all of it. I think it is important to see people you admire participate in political discourse. I represent a bi-partisan organization, and I can truly say that no matter how things go…someone is going to be upset about it.
There are two different Americas on the ticket right now. Celebrity political endorsements are great, but what does that translate to after November? People will probably feel discouraged and not want to vote again [if their side doesn't win], which is very dangerous. We need people and celebrities that are willing to participate at a grassroots level, and that means looking beyond who these candidates have backing them up and stepping into the future.
This mujer actually knows what she is talking about! Now if only this message can ring true to all the estrellas voicing their political thoughts. The lighthearted estrella also confessed a personal endeavor, which included her holiday plans to meet her boyfriend Mathieu Schreyer’s (a.k.a DJ Mr. French) familia in France! Sounds like things are getting pretty serious. Bueno, we wish Rosario plenty of salud, dinero, y amor. Be sure to check out more of Rosario Dawson during Mi TRL on October 9th at 4pm and 9pm!
