Rosario Dawson does Playboy’s 20 Questions

cropped.jpgThe dangerously sexy star of Seven Pounds talks about growing up poor, hanging out on nude beaches, her crush on Luke Perry, waiting for that big breakthrough and the special moment when your grandparents see you naked in a movie.

PLAYBOY: You’re best known for playing strong, sexually provocative roles in Sin City, Grindhouse: Death Proof, Alexander and Rent. At the age of 15 you landed a part in the controversial movie Kids even though you had no experience. Where does your confidence come from?
Dawson: My mom gave birth to me when she was 17. My dad was real young too. My mother, who is a gregarious, outspoken, full-of-life six-foot-tall plumber and part time singer from the Bronx, never spoke to me in a way that messed with my mind – like, “The stork brought you” – but in a real, sometimes overly graphic way about how she had used a condom but it broke. But I got it. When I did Kids, I had no acting training and wasn’t into movies, but like my mother, I’ve always been very observant, a people watcher. That film felt easy for me because I understood I was playing a girl who was really out there, like, “Yeah, I love sex.” I was a hundred million miles away from that person, but I had seen her and knew what persona she put on.

Excerpt of Rosario’s essay from AWEARNESS Book & Quick Interview

pkcp-5237158v275.jpgThe AWEARNESS book consists of 86 essays and conversations by individuals who have been inspired to do their part to effect meaningful social change. We will be releasing excerpts from the book throughout the week. The second is Rosario Dawson, below is a short excerpt from her contribution:

Ever since I participated in a save-the-trees march when I was ten, I’ve worked with many groups to support numerous causes, from women’s issues and workers’ rights, to HIV/AIDS awareness and poverty. But I spend most of my time working with Voto Latino, a nonpartisan organization I co-founded a few years ago, because it covers all the issues.

Inspiring Words from Rosario Dawson @ Kenneth Cole Book Launch

Inspiring Words from Rosario Dawson @ Kenneth Cole Book Launch

When celebrities rally to support important causes like curing world hunger, funding AIDS research, or in Rosario Dawson’s case, fighting for the Latino vote, it’s logical to assume that questions in the realm of, “So, what’s your favorite Christmas present ever?” are probably off-limits. But then again, no one said it was logical to assume that logic is popular these days. At Kenneth Cole’s launch party for his new book, Awearness — a compilation of 86 stories and essays by prominent media figures like Bill Clinton and Jon Bon Jovi — a crowd almost uniformly clad in head-to-toe black (Kelly Cutrone would’ve been proud) lounged as journalists pressed belle of the ball and book contributor Rosario Dawson about what she likes to unwrap under the Christmas tree.Dawson, not to be sidetracked by thoughts of holiday cheer, remained focused and shared her advice for all the dreamers out there who think that saving the world is for superheroes. “The first thing is to really see what it is in your community you want to change,” she said. “Is it the road services, the schools in the neighborhood, a bunch of elderly that are not being treated well, a lot of crime in the neighborhood, teen pregnancy, the dropout rates? What is it that’s actually happening there that you want to target? Figure that out, then inform yourself as much as you can about it. Figure out locally what other people are trying to do, because you know they definitely are. There are 1.4 million nonprofits that are running in this country right now.”

Rosario Dawson in Parts Per Billion

“I’m doing this movie called Parts Per Billion in January, with Dennis Hopper and Rosario Dawson. It’s a love story set against the end of the world, but none of the three couples it focuses on know it’s the end of the world. It’s a very poetic, philosophical script, so I think it should be fun. I’m paired up with Olivia Thirlby. She’s cool.” – Rob Pattinson

Rosario Dawson Talks About Her New Role And Co-Star Will Smith At Miami Premiere Of “Seven Pounds”

Rosario Dawson, along with co-star Will Smith, attended the Miami premiere of the new drama, “Seven Pounds”, which opens in theaters on December 19th. The film’s storyline has been mostly kept under wraps, with most materials only stating that Will Smith plays a man who affects the lives of seven strangers. But Dawson was not so tight-lipped at the premiere about the film and her character (readers wanting to avoid spoilers should be forewarned).

“I play Emily Posa. My character is dying,” Dawson tells CNS. “She has congenital heart failure disease. I’m one of the seven strangers that Will Smith’s character reaches out to and tries to change and help. In turn, she changes his life and it’s really a very beautiful pairing. I think the chemistry between these two characters is something very special that you don’t get to see very often.”
