The AWEARNESS book consists of 86 essays and conversations by individuals who have been inspired to do their part to effect meaningful social change. We will be releasing excerpts from the book throughout the week. The second is Rosario Dawson, below is a short excerpt from her contribution:
Ever since I participated in a save-the-trees march when I was ten, I’ve worked with many groups to support numerous causes, from women’s issues and workers’ rights, to HIV/AIDS awareness and poverty. But I spend most of my time working with Voto Latino, a nonpartisan organization I co-founded a few years ago, because it covers all the issues.

At the book launch of Kenneth Cole’s Awearness, the retail store located in Grand Central was abuzz in the idea change, inspiration, and color. Decked out in red and black, the store celebrated the launch of the designer’s book, a collection of 86 inspiring stories on how to make a difference. Glam had a chance to chat with one of the contributors, Rosario Dawson, whose new movie Seven Pounds with Will Smith comes out near Christmas. Clad in Kenneth Cole, the actress spoke about how she really does her shopping and why this project was so important to her.
What’s your shopping strategy?
Dawson: “I don’t really like shopping that much. I do shop at photo shoots because you know at a photo shoot they bring all of the clothes and they all fit you and they’re different so you’re like I want that jacket and I want that shoe.”
Why is this cause so important to you?:
Dawson: “I wrote about my voting organization for one of the political chapters. It’s the first chapter in the book and I co-founded it. It’s called Voto Latino and we’ve been around for four years and we’re trying to enfranchise Latinos in the political process. And I’m just really grateful. I’ve known Kenneth through passing over the past several years and we both talked about collaborating together and to talk politics. It was just such a great opportunity when he said he was doing this and I was so excited! And I get to talk about voting and Voto Latino and after an election!”
