Film buffs celebrated in October when the Weinstein Company said it would finally release “Killshot,” a much-delayed adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel that stars Mr. Rourke as a hit man. The film had bounced through at least five release dates over three years and was once written off as a direct-to-DVD bomb even though it was directed by John Madden, who won the Weinstein brothers a best picture Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love.” Harvey Weinstein cited Mr. Rourke’s new celebrity for prompting the release, telling Patrick Goldstein of The Los Angeles Times that he picked the Jan. 23 date to “capitalize on all the heat that’s going to be around Mickey.”
That capitalization, however, will be decidedly local. On Friday, don’t look for “Killshot” in Los Angeles or New York, the spots that usually first get a film when it’s billed as a “limited release” (as this one is). Instead, the Weinstein Company is releasing the film in five theaters in Phoenix. What happens after that is unclear. “We decided to use Phoenix as a test,” a Weinstein Company spokeswoman said, declining to elaborate.
