An Odd Landing in Phoenix for ‘Killshot’

Film buffs celebrated in October when the Weinstein Company said it would finally release “Killshot,” a much-delayed adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel that stars Mr. Rourke as a hit man. The film had bounced through at least five release dates over three years and was once written off as a direct-to-DVD bomb even though it was directed by John Madden, who won the Weinstein brothers a best picture Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love.” Harvey Weinstein cited Mr. Rourke’s new celebrity for prompting the release, telling Patrick Goldstein of The Los Angeles Times that he picked the Jan. 23 date to “capitalize on all the heat that’s going to be around Mickey.”

That capitalization, however, will be decidedly local. On Friday, don’t look for “Killshot” in Los Angeles or New York, the spots that usually first get a film when it’s billed as a “limited release” (as this one is). Instead, the Weinstein Company is releasing the film in five theaters in Phoenix. What happens after that is unclear. “We decided to use Phoenix as a test,” a Weinstein Company spokeswoman said, declining to elaborate.

Rosario Dawson Celebrates Young Latino Vote At Inauguration

Rosario Dawson is in some elite company. The “Seven Pounds” actress has met President-elect Barack Obama not once, but several times. “I met him a few years ago in his office when he was still Senator Obama,” she said Sunday night, as she began her walk down the red carpet at the Latino Inaugural Gala at Union Station. Co-sponsored by Voto Latino, the youth empowerment organization she co-founded, the gala — which featured a night-closing set from Marc Anthony, who was introduced by wife Jennifer Lopez — capped a day in which Dawson said she was awed once again by the incoming president’s ability to move Americans of all stripes.

“It was really great seeing him today at the Lincoln Memorial [during the "We Are One" concert," she said. "It was just remarkable to be there with him and all those other people and feel like there was just no line between anybody. Everybody was so excited to be there." Dawson was equally pumped up about her upcoming gig as one of the guest correspondents at Tuesday night's official Youth Ball, which will be a part of MTV's "Be the Change: Live From the Inaugural" special.

"I'm really excited," she said. "When we were in the wings [at the concert], I was standing with Forest Whitaker and Usher, and we hadn’t all stood together since I was 19, 10 years ago, doing ‘Light It Up.’ And suddenly we found ourselves going, ‘Oh my God, look at where we are.’ ” Dawson said she’s looking forward to telling the Youth Ball audience about what Voto Latino has been up to and how much more work there still is left to be done.

“We’re still very much trying to get people registered,

Sergio Pizzorno on Rosario Dawson

Kasabian star Sergio Pizzorno was “s***ting himself” when he recorded a track with Rosario Dawson.

The guitarist admits the actress – who he refers to as “the prostitute from ‘Sin City’ ” – was not his first choice for a collaboration on the band’s upcoming track ‘West Rider/Silver Bullet’ but was pleasantly surprised by her singing talents when they met in New York.

He said: “I didn’t even know if she could sing. The obvious thing would be to get an English girl and have that English rose kind of vibe. Like Keira Knightley, that kind of thing. I thought Rosario would be interesting, but she’s the prostitute from ‘Sin City’. I was s***ting myself in the studio, but she sounded incredible.”

Sergio also said working with the ‘Seven Pounds’ star left him star struck with her stories of glitzy Hollywood parties. He added: “She later told me that she went to Quentin Tarantino’s birthday and played it for him and he loved it. “That’s when you sit at home in Leicester tucking into you beans on toast going, ‘F***ing hell man, what’s going on?’ “

Rosario Dawson – The tough cookie with a soft centre

Aloudspeaker is almost a necessity when chatting to Rosario Dawson, who is playing Will Smith’s belle in Seven Pounds.

I’ve met Dawson before and each time we talk I’m struck by her garrulous, feisty and fun attitude. The only trouble being that once the beautiful New Yorker is on a roll it’s impossible to get a word in edgeways. Whenever one tries to butt in she simply carries on talking the talk and venturing off on her own iridescent tangents.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the 29-year-old. We see Will Smith fall for her charms in Seven Pounds, and man-of-the-moment Mickey Rourke will be another falling under her spell when John Madden’s long-gestating adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Killshot finally hits our screens. They’re simply the latest in a list of hunks that includes Edward Norton (25th Hour), Colin Farrell (Alexander), Kurt Russell (Death Proof) and, er, Brian O’Halloran (Clerks 2).

Dawson specialises in playing hard-as-nails no-nonsense chicks, which makes her turn as Emily in Seven Pounds, as a taciturn patient awaiting a heart-transplant, a nice surprise. Although I’m even more surprised to hear Dawson say, “I fell in love with Emily. I have a tendency to play characters that I don’t like very much.”
