* – The Fifth Night screenplay reading series in the late 90s @ the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where as an involved submissions-reader for them I spoke with you each time I saw you read, but also met your cool Mom once and have a nice memory of the 2 of you hugging strongly next to me by the front bar, while a short film played before a reading.
Because I saved many programs from Fifth Night, the readings I saw you in were “Angel Brothers”, “3 am”, excerpts from SVA scripts (you read in “Milk and Honey” & “Power Zoe”), and “A Round Robin”. At the latter, I even joked with you about wanting to start your fan club in case you became a star…and had you sign the program as a “kicking-off” point of being a leader of fan-club-activities.
Ya gotta realize, I never ask for autographs. Well, glad I did that night. It’s a nice keepsake of a star on the rise.
* A year later, you hugged me from behind, with a kiss on the neck, outside Loews 19th/Bway’s movie theater, before “Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me”. I was waiting for an actress date to show up, so I was only disappointed for a millisecond when I saw it wasn’t her, but pleased as punch it was you greeting me so warmly. (“He Got Game” was just out.) We had a nice chat about the summer road-trip you were soon to do with your family.
* Another year or so later @ Sundance, we had a brief reunion as you finished your Q & A with “Love In The Time Of Money”, then a few hours later at my post outside the Egyptian theater, you walked by & gave me another fast kiss, on the cheek this time, and you threw my dangling scarf around my neck and said “Don’t catch cold!” as you walked on uphill with friends, a nice memory-filled smile back at me.
* Another few years later, listening to headphone-music @ Tower Records in the Village and you went by me. A very quick reunion, but I was seemingly becoming less of a memory to you…no doubt because you had to be more on your guard as your career kept taking off. That’s the trade-off for you accomplishing your dreams on a worldwide scale, I know.
* -Said hi to you after a performance of “Two Gentlemen of Verona”, but you were nicely distracted by VERY young fans who were so happy to meet you. You were so gracious with them. I brought up a new mutual friend of ours: Sarah Baker from “Rent”s crew, who is not only a great friend of mine (and she’s optioning my first screenplay), but she produced my first short film “Tis The Season”…
…. Which you eventually watched and she shared your brief email note about liking it. (The little girl who mistakes a Hasid for Santa. When we were planning it while you were both on “Rent”, I suggested she pitch it to you. It’s since played various festivals, a Delta Airlines contest, and it was on Channel 13 in NYC just before last Xmas.)
I almost didn’t write this…but I just happened to finally see “Clerks 2″ this past week, and naturally one can get immersed in how it was made, thanks to Kevin Smith’s copious amounts of DVD extras. Seeing you do yet another great job…and hearing on the commentaries how Kevin and his team never presumed you’d be an atypical big star and do the film with them…
…To that I wish you again “HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY!”…And I’ll add your blooper-reel trademark “MOOBY’S!!!!”
