Rosario Dawson: It was wild to play a goddess

Rosario Dawson: It was wild to play a goddess

SHE is playing the very embodiment of the Earth’s fertility, and what hot-blooded male wouldn’t want a piece of her?

Latina actress Rosario Dawson seems like the perfect choice to play Greek goddess Persephone in a new fantasy adventure, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

We visited the set in Vancouver to find out how she enjoyed shooting a film with a cast including Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean and Steve Coogan who, as Hades, makes her his queen in the Underworld.

In costume as Persephone, she is in a low cut, black and purple lace dress with a bodice, bustle and high-heeled boots.

Rosario said: “My chest is out there, the lust is out there, it’s just dripping with sensuality and aggression.

“It has been really fun playing a goddess, I have to say. She’s wild. It is full-on flirtatiousness.”

Rosario Dawson Says ‘Parts Per Billion’ Will Go On Without Robert Pattinson

‘That happens,’ actress/producer says of ‘Twilight’ heartthrob’s busy schedule.

Typically, an actor needs to wait until they’ve been in Hollywood for decades (Robert Redford) or have a half-dozen $100 million blockbusters under their belt (Tom Cruise) before they can start diversifying. As producer/actress/writer Rosario Dawson prepares to celebrate her 30th birthday, however, she’s already proving herself to be a rare multitalented threat.

“I come from an independent background — the first film I ever did was ‘Kids,’ ” she told us recently about the controversial 1995 indie flick that marked her debut. “And I didn’t want to be an actor; it wasn’t something that I thought about. … It’s a risk, I think, for some people going [into the independent film world], but that’s my home. That’s where I feel most inspired.”

Dawson has forged an impressive career jumping between blockbusters (“Eagle Eye,” “Sin City,” “Men in Black II”) and small personal films (“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” “Chelsea Walls”) that would likely never be made without her. She recently launched her producing career with “Descent,” continues to develop her comic-book/movie hybrid “Occult Crimes Taskforce” and promises that she’ll soon produce and star in “Parts Per Billion” — with or without a certain high-profile “Twilight” star.

“It would [have been] good to have him in the film, and I thought the relationship between him and Olivia [Thirlby] would be really well-expressed,” she said of Robert Pattinson

Rosario Dawson BlackBook Interview

Everyone wants to be discovered. It’s that improbable stroke of fate-changing luck. All you need is looks, an innate charisma, and chance. When Rosario Dawson was discovered by Larry Clark at age 15 on a Lower East Side stoop, and cast in his controversial classic Kids, it could have been a one-off performance, a flicker of fame. But a year later, Dawson followed up with a role in Spike Lee’s He Got Game–and we hate to use the cliche–but a star was born. She gave up aspirations of marine biology and engineering to pursue a full-time acting career. More than a decade later, Dawson is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actresses, with a to-die-for filmography that tipples between big time studio pics and admired indie fair. Most recently, the actress has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role in the harrowing social drama Explicit Ills. Dawson plays a destitute single mother, struggling to find the means to care for her asthmatic son. Her role is minimal, but it breaks your heart. Here, the actress discusses why this movie matters, her acting tactics, and a drops little advice for L.A.’s newest resident, Conan O’Brien.

Who do you think needs to see this film and also how do you think a film this small can find an audience?
Well it’s interesting, because I’ve known Mark for a really long time and these are issues that are really personal to him, and that’s why he felt the need to make this film and to set it in Philly, and have it be about not just poverty, but the healthcare system, homelessness, and drug abuse. And since he shot the movie to now, it’s changed so much.

Rosario Dawson discusses Wonder Woman

This? This is only a dagger.
Artemis, the Amazons’ lead warrior, prepares for battle in Wonder Woman, an all-new DC Universe animated original movie to be distributed March 3, 2009 by Warner Home Video. Rosario Dawson supplies the voice of Artemis.

Actress and fanboy favorite Rosario Dawson delivers a knockout punch as the voice of strong-willed Amazonian warrior Artemis in Wonder Woman, the next entry in the popular series of DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies due from Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation on March 3, 2009. Warner Home Video will distribute the all-new film, which will also be available OnDemand and Pay-Per-View as well as available for download day and date, March 3, 2009.

Dawson, whose voiceover experience was previously limited to a single episode of Robot Chicken, completely immersed herself in the warrior mindset to bring Artemis to animated life. Dawson’s resonating take on the focused, powerful tones and dry, no-nonsense (and thus, unintentional humor) approach of Artemis perfectly complements the work done by the rest of the stellar voice cast, which includes Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Virginia Madsen and Alfred Molina.

Fans in the San Francisco Bay Area will have a chance to see the West Coast Premiere of Wonder Woman at WonderCon on Friday, February 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Esplanade Ballroom of The Moscone Center. The premiere will be followed by a panel discussion of the film led by Virginia Madsen (the voice of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons), producer Bruce Timm, director Lauren Montgomery, writer Michael Jelenic and moderated by DC Comics Senior Vice President of Creative Affairs Gregory Noveck.

In a career spanning just over a dozen years, Dawson has managed to seamlessly glide between fanboy features, big-time Hollywood epics, charming independent and “smaller” films, and even a musical. She is constantly in demand by the hippest of today’s filmmakers from Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez to Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee and Kevin Smith., Her on-screen resume includes Sin City (and its upcoming sequel), Eagle Eye, Grindhouse, Clerks and Men in Black II, as well Rent, Alexander, 25th Hour, He Got Game and the recent Seven Pounds.

Dawson is every fanboy’s fantasy: a stunning beauty with a greater love and knowledge of comic books than your average Wednesday-at-Golden-Apple geek. She has her own comic book series (“Occult Crimes Taskforce”), she hosted Saturday Night Live just a few weeks ago, and she once spoke Klingon as a guest on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

An interview with Dawson is only challenging for your tape recorder – because she has the capacity to answer a question for three minutes without taking a breath. She is more impressive and endearing than you’d ever hope to find, and she offered a significant stretch of time to discuss her role in Wonder Woman, the intrinsic attributes of a great super hero, an absolute adoration of Neil Gaiman, some deleted The Devil’s Rejects scenes, a hankering to play the live-action version of Harley Quinn, and her love for anything in the comics realm.

Enjoy the thoughts of Rosario Dawson …
